Installment 3

By Dave LaBonte

The room is coming along great. It's starting to really take shape. It's really becoming fun as we start to add the details. In these series of photos, first you'll see the PVC pipe we used to simulate iron pipes. Next you'll see the wall vents that we made from plastic floor drains which we added bolts to. Next, the jewel of the whole room, is the inside brass frame around the bubble window. It is a pretty close replica of the frame in the Grand Salon. It's actually made of wood with lots of coats of gold paint to make it look like brass. Again, all the bolt heads and rivets are molded out of resin. There's also a good shot of the corner edge of the doorway. People that have come into the room touch the walls and ask "How did you get all these metal plates in here?" We just laugh and explain it's all paint. They often can't believe it and say that the walls actually feel colder, like iron. Funny how the mind can fake you out.

Next is a close up of the supports we are making to hold up a wooden railing we use to present artwork to our clients. The support is made of wood, coated with bronze paint and then coated with a patina solution. Next is an assortment of PVC joints and connectors in the process of being made to look like bronze pieces.

Next are the PVC pipes in the "rusting" process followed by several shots of the pipes being put into place. Also a good shot of our side lights, which are actually ceiling lights but work well for this application.

The last shot is the bubble window being checked for size and fit. You can see one section of the "bronze" ring that goes around the window. It's also made of wood with the patina effect. We'll have some close up shots of this in the next installment.

Anyway, we're having too much fun with this. If anyone has any suggestions as we outfit the room, I'd love to hear them.
